Self-Care Tips from Our Crossover Providers
‘Tis the season of giving. We’re sure you’ve mastered the giving to others part; but what about the self-care needed to sustain yourself through the holidays and into the new year?
In all the hustle and bustle of the season, our clinicians want you to understand that self-care is not selfish and to take time to include yourself on your gift list. Here are 4 ways to gift yourself good health this holiday and in 2023.
1. Take Action to Boost Your Mood
Let’s be real, the busyness of the holiday season combined with colder weather and darker days can bring stress and anxiety. Recognizing those feelings, then working to boost positive emotions can help get you back on track and improve your mood. Here are a few steps to get started.
2. Eat Healthy to Sustain Your Joy
You can find joy in your food and balance healthy eating this holiday! Instead of thinking of certain foods as “good” or “bad,” one of our trusted health coaches explains how to shift your focus to joy, balance, and flexibility in this video.
3. Connect with Your Breath to Stay Centered
Sometimes a quick moment to notice your breath may be all you need to recenter yourself. Take that moment now.
4. Stretch the Stress Out
When we experience long-term stress, our bodies can hold tension in our neck and shoulder muscles. Try these stretches to help loosen the tension in your body and mind.
Schedule self-care activities like exercise, meditation, or relaxing hobbies in your calendar, and treat them as non-negotiable appointments. Start small with just 10-15 minutes per day.
Keep fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, yogurt, and whole grain crackers nearby for nutritious options when you need a quick pick-me-up.
Try deep breathing exercises, journaling, or talking to a trusted friend. Don’t be afraid to set boundaries and say no to obligations that don’t serve you.
Look for indoor options like taking the stairs, doing home workout videos, or going for a walk at the mall. Dress warmly and get outside for short bursts of fresh air when possible.
Stick to a consistent bedtime routine, limit screen time before bed, and consider using blackout curtains or an eye mask to optimize your sleep environment.
Try dry brushing, taking an Epsom salt bath, or applying a nourishing face mask a few times per week.
Feeling constantly fatigued, having trouble sleeping, experiencing increased anxiety or irritability, or neglecting your normal healthy habits.
